易水古砚取石于河北省易县钟南山。唐代易州墨砚匠人奚家父子到钟南山峪取易水研墨，发现钟南山石石质密实，斑纹奇彩，细腻似玉，刚柔相兼，于是采回雕刻成精美易砚，其后因战乱，奚家父子南迁徽州，因始创徽墨被宋帝召见，徽墨与易砚遂成为当时的贡品。易水砚选用玉帘石和紫翠石，艺人运用多种雕技，随料巧琢，因材赋形，雕刻成图形吉祥、干姿百态的砚台精品，龙、鱼、龟、蟾、蚕、棋、琴七大品类，易水砚已成砚苑传世名品，为我国四大名砚之一。
